@mary That was normal. These cars didn’t have trolley retrievers - those didn’t come along until the Z classes of the early 1970s. All Ws and older cars had hooks on the roof which held the unused pole down, and the rope was loose and usually tied to a special bracket on the side - or sometimes the grab handle near the driver’s cab door.
