@malcircuit Maybe it's specifically G-type or G2V starlight above some level of intensity; so they can't tolerate Sol or Alpha Centauri A (also G2V), but they could live in the Sirius system.
Perhaps it's down to the ultraviolet, but then modern windows would probably be sufficient protection, or maybe even just sunblock lotion.
