so, I did a board swap of an IDE hard drive today.
The good news is that it didn't seem to make the situation worse, but the bad news is that it threw the exact error messages I got at me than the original board.
I need to try this with an onboard IDE controller instead of the crappy USB controller I have that is doing really poorly on error handling.
But not today, I'd need at least half an hour, probably more to set this up
