I think what is interesting to me is that Tiktok isn’t banned, per se. It’s just that Google and Apple have to delist the app from the store until such time as a buyer is found for its US arm. So the app will still work, if installed still, but will slowly degrade over time as updates can’t be officially delivered (android APKs notwithstanding).

Now, Trump has said that he will not enforce the legislation that has been passed that makes this law. That doesn’t undo the legislation, it just suspends it.

But, of course, that isn’t really a reassurance. If Apple and Google were to begin to provide app updates to Tiktok, then they would face a huge fine, in the hundreds of billions. Plus, the act passed with a HUGE majority in both chambers… So there’s very little chance it could be undone.

Put another way: the legislation won’t be repealed because it gives Trump leverage over Tiktok US, Google, and Apple due to how popular the app is in the USA. Now, if Tiktok, Apple, and Google demonstrate enough fealty (esp since all three sent their CEO to his inauguration…), perhaps things could change legally speaking. We can see how clearly this has happened with the fact that the Tiktok app blatantly pandered to him with an in-app message and much like Zucc, has been pre-emptively trying to censor sensitive topics (eg free Palestine).

This isn’t to say that Trump is playing like, 4D chess. He’s not. He’s just picking up random peices and eating them.

In any case… Watching what happens with Tiktok will be a good barometer to see what Trump plans to do with other large technology corporations…
