So Matrix exists, but from my experience it is kinda jank and one-on-one chats are treated as entire chatrooms unto themselves
Wire exists but I haven't used it in a long time and I have not seen anyone confirm it is reliable security-wise
Threema costs money
XMPP/Jabber can be made to be secure too, but I don't know if they ever hashed out the issue with the device priority system (haven't used it in 10 years) and it also seems even more technical than Matrix.
