@purplepadma@beige.party I really wonder if the people who continue to use the term "refugee" in reference to someone migrating from Twitter to Bluesky or any other combinations of social media sites would understand it if i used a different word. I guess, the closest comparison I could draw would be if you replaced the term "canceled" with "lynched". Imagine if you will, people saying "They want to lynch me" instead of "They want to cancel me". I wish I could explain to you the discomfort I felt writing that. In highschool, when I was studying US history as a junior... kids in my class used that word in an inappropriate context and my teacher reacted in a way i'll never forget. She stopped class, full on stopped class told everyone to be quiet. We had a 15+ minute lecture about how it is inappropriate to joke about lynching, to use that word. How it is our job not to water down words like lynch because it erases history. It removes the severity of that word, the background. The people who died from lynchmobs, who lived their lives in constant fear of that one word. who watched violent mobs string up their family members in trees. If you wouldn't make lighthearted remarks about lynching, why is it okay to call yourself a refugee for the simple act of moving social media platforms.
