@jockr that little raspberry pi zero nas that I built last year has just a 16 gb, which is plenty to hold previous 12 months of data for me.
Funny story. I actually bought a low-cost and high-speed 64 GB thumb drive for it .. but that thing got way too hot.
USB 2 is fast enough in this role and not a fire hazard!
