sudo apt update

sudo apt install prosody lua-event

then copy included file to /etc/prosody/prosody.cfg.lua and adapt it to your setup

then do the letsencrypt thing for all subdomains mentioned in the config and add this hook to it:

systemctl reload prosody

and that’s all, create user accounts via prosodyctl and you have an actually working IM server that won’t eat your cheap VPS resources

for clients: I’m using Gajim on desktop, Monal on iOS and Conversations on Chromebook/Android; feel free to experiment with other clients.
