Sirens on emergency vehicles are tolerable inside the protective cocoon of a car or a bus, but for a pedestrian on the pavement they are deafeningly loud.
People cower and cover their ears when an emergency vehicle passes , and if the sirens start right beside you, it is heart attack material.
