In a Marxist framework, the US was a slave society from its founding until after the Civil War, at which point it became a feudal society. At least parts of the US remain feudal societies while the economy en gros would not become a capitalist one until the 1970s.
So while the USSR began transitioning from centrally-planned capitalism to socialism in the 1980s, the US was only just becoming capitalist in any meaningful sense.
