Positive properties a "competitive" (meaning versus not like try hard, I still want it to be fun) board game can have (imo):
- how the people are placed around the table shouldn't influence the outcome, systems like the one in Faraway or Petit Peuples, and/or games where everybody plays at the same time, are preferable
- it should be the right amount of random, players that are more used to the game / in a better mental state should be more likely to win, but could also lose
- you should be able to influence the other's score/winning chances, not just focus on your own score, but it should affect everybody else not a specific person, or if it affects a specific person it shouldn't be a choice that is detrimental to you (to not be in a scenario where the only way to hinder the winning player is to sacrifice yourself)
- short games are better, if it's good you can play several times in a row
- simple games are better, as long as you can still make a strategy and not rely on randomness
