You don't win an election solely by explaining how awful your opponent is.
Even if they actually are, people still need to be convinced of it. But YOU are not going to convince them. Or only those who ALREADY trust you.
Others expect you to try and win, not to tell the truth. They will see what they say about your rival at best as a political ploy, at worst as you being hysterical.
What matters is what you say about YOURSELF (which doesn't prevent you from ALSO criticising your opponent).
