@halcy You probably can, their solution potentially avoids tearout. These are just particleboard after all.
They have us drill out one of the holes used for putting a shelf wherever we want then putting in a screw sleeve and a screw into that from the other side.
There's also this person on Etsy who has an interesting solution that doesn't involve any drilling, so long as you bought a solid color shelf: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1798630221/connector-for-ikea-billy-bookcase?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details
(I doubt it'd hide well against the walnut veneer ones I got.)
