Was thinking of SpongeBob today. It’s such a weird phenomenon. Some marine biologist had this passion project about fish, because he was autistically interested in fish. And somehow that project has literally defined certain parts of pop culture, i’d even say it defined a generation. There are so many people in my real life who I relate to simply by quoting SpongeBob. Occasionally when I’m just getting to know someone, I’ll quote the show, and it will immediately give us something to talk about.
But I also think about how strange it must’ve been for Show Creator Stephen Hillenburg. This thing you made as a little passion project suddenly becomes one of, if not the biggest thing in television.
How would that make you feel? How would you react if something you worked on, something you felt passionate towards, suddenly, out of nowhere, got so big? So big that you couldn’t be in full control of it anymore. Suddenly, there are executives from various companies wanting to do collaborations or deals with the show. How would you handle that stress? And how would you handle separating yourself from the project to an extent?
