A few months ago I gave feedback on a verbose pagination pattern at W3C:

Broadly, it was:
• Remove all the visually-hidden text;
• Remove all aria-label
;
• Use visually-hidden text to name the landmark (if needed);
• Use aria-current
;
• Don’t stress about list type.

I would probably also avoid “disabling” any links and would urge devs to test in the most common SR/browser pairings as well.
