The role of a community administrator should be one of service, not control. Admins, mods, and other staff are responsible for providing a safe and enjoyable environment for their community members. That must come first above all other interests and concerns, even if doing so requires hard choices and personal sacrifice.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of admins who abuse their power and position. I know many people who've been traumatized by abuse, abandonment, and betrayal by leaders that they thought they could trusted. I've experienced it myself, in fact. You are never wrong for wanting a safe environment. You owe it to yourself to find a space where you're protected and welcome, and that doesn't make you selfish.
