@markus Yeah, I use Signal's servers (via Molly-FOSS) but I agree with the criticism. I think Signal has provable security improvements over other centralized messaging platforms, but it is most certainly not made in the spirit of free software, even if it does have an AGPL-3.0 license in its repo. The flippant attitude towards Google services, as well as the hostility towards forks and third party clients makes me unable to recommend it whole heartedly.
Matrix is absolutely the best to me, and that's what I recommend to people. Federated is hard to beat imho. Harder to make bad decisions for your community if they're not forced to use your software.
