9 years ago I blogged about how Nginx didn't properly support specifying a hostname for an upstream server, unless you paid for Nginx Plus. I also provided a workaround which has helped me out many times since then: https://tenzer.dk/nginx-with-dynamic-upstreams/.
Today Nginx 1.27.3 has been released which seems to finally include the previous Plus-only functionality in the open source version: https://nginx.org/en/CHANGES.
