@words_number @sunfish Most of the time I agree with you: I usually want deterministic and reproducible results. But not always. Sometimes I only care about having a "satisficing" answer, meaning I want to get any one of many possible correct answers that is good enough for my current purposes. This comes up a lot in NP-Complete problems. In that case, randomization is a very useful tool for finding an answer more quickly. The result can still be explainable without being deterministic.
