One thing I've loved about Linksys routers while playing with OpenWRT - they have a dual boot feature. When you buy the router, it has two identical firmware partitions.
Flash the OEM partition with OpenWRT and the backup partition remains on the OEM firmware. Screw up OpenWRT, boot 3 times unsuccessfully and it switches to the backup partition.
My WRT1900ACS also channels my old WRT54G, the first router I really got to play with.
