The 2G and 3G mobile networks are incredibly insecure due to the SS7 network it depends on. And #veritasium has a pretty good walk-through of how it can be abused.

TL;DW: If you can disable #2G and #3G on your phone, do that. And use encrypted Internet based services as much as possible for texting and calls, like @simplex or @signalapp ... SS7 provides location tracking capabilities without GPS, interception and spoofing of both calls and text messages - at an affordable price for scammers (a few thousand $ per month).
