Toot

I had a moment of philosophical reflection on my "why", as in, why do I do what I do (cybersecurity engineering). I've had opportunities to move towards more leadership/managerial roles, however I keep forging ahead in the trenches and IC roles.

The quotes that keeps circling around in my head is from Star Trek: TNG and the episode "Relics". Scotty says "Oh, enjoy these times, Geordi. You're the Chief Engineer of a starship; and that's a time of your life that'll never come again. When it's gone - it's gone." Also in that episode he says "Oh, I may be captain by rank; but I never wanted to be anything else but an engineer."

Now I'm not a chief engineer of a starship, but I still love solving problems by engineering solutions. Granted, not every problem can be solved by tech and engineering alone, but sometimes it takes engineering to understand that.

What is your "why"?
