God, can you imagine? States seceding from the USA. Maybe some become sovereign nations, maybe some combine to form larger nations… about three major geographic areas in all. They can form the “North American Union”, analogous to the EU (free trade, freedom of movement, etc.), along with Canada and Mexico.
It’s not a new idea, and I’m sure it’s still wildly unlikely, but it’s also more plausible today than at any other point in history.

What would it look like? Would it be a bloody, violent affair like the first Civil War? Or would it be more like a Civil Cold War? Would Trump order the military to open fire on citizens of seceding states? Would the military obey? Would he, with senile rage and murderous glee, order actual nuclear strikes on former American soil? We already know he really, really wanted to nuke something in his first term…

Plus, the lines aren’t nearly as cut-and-dried now as they were in the 1860s. Nearly every state is purple, an archipelago of urban and near-suburban blue areas surrounded by seas of red rural areas. Could states even hold together? Would we break down all the way to the COUNTY level? Urban enclave nations created out of clumps of counties, borders locked down and patrolled, surrounded on all sides by fascist MAGA-land?

@freya Microsoft has a lot of pull there, though. Actually, now that I think about it, all the big blue areas are dominated by big tech, big finance, or both.
Oh god, we’re screwed, aren’t we? 😅

@freya “Prisoner’s Dilemma” has been running through my head for a while now. Civil disobedience can stop them, but only if the resistance is large enough, otherwise resisters are liable to be retaliated against; and people are too afraid to resist them because the resistance isn’t large enough, so it doesn’t get large enough. Catch-22.
