~3 years into living in Chapel Hill, I'm still surprised that the cost of living here is higher than in SF.

• Instead of public transit, we now pay/maintain 3 vehicles (fuel, insurance, registration)

• We now have a gym membership (we used to bicycle everywhere)

• We now use 3X the electricity, 2X the gas, and >2X the water

• We ate out less (groceries were a 2-minute walk if we needed to improvise)

• Hobbies went from ~free to $

On the + side, we now pay a mortgage instead of rent.

@thomrstrom having lived in both places, I also feel like "not being surrounded by fire multiple times a year" is a plus for Chapel Hill

@neurovagrant Yeah, truth be told, suffering through fire season during lock-down was a huge impetus for us to relocate.

@thomrstrom Same; I moved back to Central Massachusetts, where I'm from.

Those queasy orange apocalypse skies for weeks at a time during lockdown were too freaky.
