Toot

A friend of mine is a #Barclays customer, but luckily largely unaffected by their massive tech fail.

One thing they WERE appalled about was the fact the Barclays bird site advice was to “go to Trussell Trust or Citizens Advice”.

That’s basically a) contact a food bank if you can’t buy food with money you have but they won’t permit you access to &…

b) Get legal & benefits advice from a voluntary sector org because a leading big 4 bank is abnegating its core responsibilities to customers. 😡

@autoperipatetikos It’s vile, isn’t it? Their shareholders should be made to get off their fat cat backsides and make cash transfers available to those who are stuck without.

@InnerVisioner

Par for the course for Barclays.

Definitely the high street bank with the shittiest attitude to its customers and one of the worst records when it comes to unethical investments.

And that's a pretty high bar for them to clear as well.

@essjayjay Hi EssJayJay 👋☺️

Absolutely. They always used to be the “apartheid” bank for a long time. Then this which I’m told is not the first time they’ve messed up their banking network.

But abandoning customers to get help from charities is totally out of order when the shareholders are no doubt doing very well, thank you very much!

@InnerVisioner

Yes, the apartheid boycotts used to include Barclays bank.

I've read Google reviews of a local branch that suggests their in-person customer service is unhelpful too.

@srfirehorseart @essjayjay They were one of the first branches to go near here, so yeah - can imagine they’re clearly not bothered about supporting their customers 😕.

@InnerVisioner Don't UK foodbanks not allow you unless you've been referred by a Doctor or Social Worker? You can't just rock up to them and get free food. At least not in the ones near me.

@UnicornsRock Good point!

Didn’t think through to that, but unlikely the people at a local TT just taking pity on you as a Barclays customer without any prior authorisation to help.

@InnerVisioner

It ought to be treated as theft if they refuse access to funds via alternative means. Wanna close all your banks and fail to provide any viable physical alternative? Let's see how that affects the bottom line now.

@wordsmith Absolutely!

If you can’t get access to your own money electronically and all the high street branches have gone, it’s theft as you say, and dereliction of basic obligations.

Shareholders should have to compensate.

Glad I’m with a (slightly) better bank, but that’s not saying much.

@InnerVisioner It seems like this is the go to response for companies & even public institutions. Go get help from charity.

Why is the CAB & other charities carrying the weight & doing the work of companies that profit & social structures where it's their job to help.

The CAB have helped me more than any other organisation ever. Yes that makes them wonderful but that should never be the case

@sentient_water They are amazing and have helped me as well on other matters, but agree it’s fundamentally wrong that the greediest private sector companies can get away with this attitude.

@InnerVisioner It's even charities & government social services.

The CAB give practical help every time.
