I will never forget that this is what Americans voted for. Not by accident. Not for the lolz. Not as a protest. On purpose. And yes. I know “not all Americans.” I know that many Americans on this site, in particular, opposed him. But not nearly enough of you. You have declared economic war on us, your most loyal ally and trading partner. You have torn up trade treaties and a century of friendship over a lie. There is virtually no fentanyl coming over the Canadian border. And very few migrants.

Tonight, as a Canadian, as an Albertan - and, incidentally as a once-proud graduate of Stanford University - I stand with my country. With our farmers. Our energy workers. Our auto workers. Our forestry workers. All our exporters. And all our consumers. This is going to hurt our economy in ways we can’t yet imagine. But I believe we will hold fast and hold strong.

@Paulatics Thank you, Senator, it’s reassuring to hear leadership when so much is at stake.
I can’t help but feel deep embarrassment and disappointment at the Alberta govt's response thus far. Instead of standing with Canada, our Premier seems willing to throw the entire country under the bus just to protect the oil & gas industry. That’s not leadership. It’s self-serving and deeply un-Canadian.
We deserve better than a Premier who won’t stand up for us unless it benefits her politically.

@jace What I found disturbing is that Danielle Smith only stood up for the oil & gas industry. There was no talk about beef, or wheat, or lumber, or manufacturing of any kind. It was only oil and gas.

I guess those 'slacker' Alberta industries better 'beef' up more cash $$.

@KenHemmerling @jace I wonder if as much of those other industries have as much US ownership as the oil industry. I think it's 70% in oil?
