It hurts because it's kinda true ;)

lol, a lot of it is #adhd culture.

You could call it something like ASMR, but its not just sounds, and its not to feel euphoric, but just to get through the day.
Fidget toys are a great example.

@rl_dane @thelinuxcast I do/have done at least half the things on that list at various periods in my life π
I have always really liked leg shaking when lying down. But I learned real quick to force myself to stop when I was sharing a room with a couple other guys in my 20s. The last thing you want to do in company is make rhythmic noises/movement under the covers in bed π€£

I like typing, chewing gum, and also leg shaking, but while sitting.
I also like shukkeling, which is rhythmic "nodding" of the upper body back and forth while sitting, particularly while praying.

@thelinuxcast @rl_dane it's fine, it's normal, every generation did it and every generation will continue doing it. language is meant to be expanded upon and appropriated by the people using it, especially in this types of cases.
here is some help. :neofox_book:
neurospicy = neurodivergent, or neuroatypical, such as people with autism or adhd, for example.
and "stim" is a short for "stimming". stimming is referencing stimulation. self-stimulation in this case, like making a pen click or fiddling around with an object. you can stim in tons of ways. i'm autistic and adhd. i stim with my voice. i stim with my fingers. i do stim with my mechanical keyboard. i stim with some magnets. tons of stuff. It helps me focus. It helps with other aspects of my mental health to keep me present, it soothes me.
hope this helps! :neofox_happy:

How do you stim with your voice? Humming? Singing?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from rl_dane@polymaths.social
@rl_dane @thelinuxcast for me, the typical way in which i stim with my voice is, i guess the best term i could use would be "groaning"? it's a low-pitch frequency that comes from the back of the throat and that i maintain. i tend to do it as a stress reaction. it helps. :neofox_comfy_sip:

Ah, I used to do that as a kid, try to get my voice so low that it sounded like individual clicks.

This doesn't bother me at all. I find the clicky keyboard extremely satisfying, and that's why I bought it.

@rl_dane I mean, the click is nice, but mostly I like not having to buy 4-8 keyboards a year.

You actually wear through keyboards that fast?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from rl_dane@polymaths.social
@rl_dane Yes and no, but mostly yes. The keyboards they gave me at work started squeaking after a month, the letters are worn off by month three, and usually some key rips or starts to stick somewhere between the second and third month.
Plus, the kids are hard on the keyboards in a food/liquid type of destruction.
When I last tried to guess what I was doing, it was around 750k strokes/month between fiction, non-fiction, and programming. Though, I don't have that kind of time (the second child really killed my free time) but some of those habits are there given how long my responses are on social media. :P
Even with a mechanical keyboard, I seem to be replacing them about once every nine months.
There is a reason Cherry Blue keyboards are banned in the office. :D I was told it sounded too much like a gatling gun starting up and it got worse when someone said something stupid and not based on reality (I response with wall of text way too easily).

My buddy @dfloyd888 really sounded like he was trying to shoot down a Zero or something when he typed. XD
Of course, I haven't seen him in like 25-30ish years, so maybe he's quieter now.

Hey, mad props to those who own it! I mainly made the #meme because I myself realized just today that typing was #stimming for me.
It explains why I find reading on paper/kindle and writing with a fountain pen on ink so relaxing, compared to reading and clacking away on my laptop.
Those circular keycaps don't look fun to use, though. But if she likes 'em, mazel tov!

@rl_dane The main keys are still concave so she touch-types just fine. There are even embossed lines on the F and J to guide her index fingers.
