It's an old and common observation that capitalism tends to be followed by democracy. It's vital to realise that democracy was created by workers' and other popular movements, in conflict with the capitalists. Oligarchs don't want democracy, they're just easier to campaign against than Kings.

If you want to protect a democracy, you need mass movements that can threaten profits. Sure the decisive moment may be a parliamentary vote or even an insurrection, but our leaders are given courage by our movements, not the other way round.

America's dark moment is a result of all the purges. The civil rights movement in the 70s, the unions in the 80s, through to BLM and the Palestine protests. Anyone who might provide force on the streets to defend democracy gets beaten, expelled, arrested, assassinated. That's what brought you here.
