The nascent tech worker unions of recent years really WENT FOR IT. They challenged the racism. They challenged the ties to the military that quietly prop up the entire American tech sector. The bosses are PISSED OFF.

My posts do so so much better here than on bsky (even the non tech ones). I think mastodon is much more sincere and earnest than most of the net, and those are important and valuable qualities when facing a fascism that is at war with the very existence of facts.

It's going to be Very Very bad when Google fully flips to the right, and I am not aware of a mainetream-ready way to escape Google.

Doing that annoying clap thing people used to do

👏hate👏tech👏owners👏love👏tech👏workers👏

Workers have opposing interests to owners and tech workers have been fighting with these tech bro dickheads since the 1970s. We have ideas and infrastructure but we need your allyship.

Ghost.io is a great place to host newsletter/blog content and you can take your website, payments, and mailing list away with you any time. Ready for prime time.

Many smaller projects. Matrix messenger. Mattermost which is a slack clone. Pixelfed which is like Instagram. Next cloud is a Google drive replacement. All of these are less noob ready. We have to find ways to direct investment to this sector.

Options available:

Signal instant messenger. Ready for prime time as a WhatsApp replacement. Centralised but non-profit with storing privacy guarantees.

Mastodon, a sort-of twitter clone. Works well but doesn't fit everyone's needs. Decentralised, non-profit.

Bluesky, a close twitter clone. Ready for prime time. Currently centralised and not secure and profit-making. VC investment by crypto firms. #freeourfeeds want to fix the centralisation, support them .

The tech oligarchs have lined up with the far right and are engaging in open censorship. The right is going to grow as a result, although it will appear larger and more popular than it actually is.

We have a lost decade to make up for. We need to mainstream oligarchy-resistant social media.

The annoying nerds who said you should install Linux, use decentralised social media, use Signal secure messenger were right.

Control of our own computing is a prerequisite for freedom.

The internet is real life.

People be askin me all the time

"Yo Mos, what's gettin ready to happen with the internet?"

I tell em "You know what's gonna happen with the internet?

Whatever's happening with us"

If we smoked out, the internet is gonna be smoked out

If we doin alright, the internet is gonna be doin alright

People talk about the internet like it's some giant livin in the hillside

Comin down to visit the townspeople

We are the internet

Me, you, everybody, we are the internet

So the internet is goin where we goin

There's fun to be had on bluesky but dear god is it full of smug middle aged liberal academics, just dunking on anyone different - young people, anyone who doesn't fear China, anyone who orders takeaway and on. In their imaginary, everyone in America is well-off and petulant and only turning to extreme politics out of boredom at their comfortable lives. I've never seen anything like it.

Just struck me that the "vibecession" libs are identical to commissars in 1985. "Tractor production is up 5% this year, all popular complaints must be foreign propaganda."

This is 100% correct - dealing with Big Tech, turning off its power over our citizens, has become a geopolitical necessity.

Civilization III is the best Civ game. IV and on add more and more gamey systems. You can easily hold all of Civ III's mechanics in your head at once.

As well as playing more quickly, it leaves room for the imagination. It has that magic I remember from playing I-III back in the day.

Caught a clip of the Zuckerberg/Rogan interview and Zuckerberg was saying it's not fair that any of the countries Meta trades in can threaten to put him in prison if his company breaks the law. It's a lot of countries therefore that's not fair!

A government could easily pick up ActivityPub software and make it mainstream. UX is mostly about money. Several governments did that with Linux and open office suites years ago (though it took a quixotic and determined private company to bring us Linux gaming)

I see fellow-nerds doing a sort of "told you so" about this, what they are missing is that no you didn't, you said it lots but most people never got to hear your argument at all. They're hearing it for the first time now and you have to start at first principles and be compassionate for how corpo social media has hurt them.
