This piece by Marina Hyde on the irony of OpenAI complaining that some of DeepSeek's working were 'stolen' from them raised a smile this morning.... as Hyde suggests, when your business model is the effective theft of content across the internet, no-one really is going to (our should) have much sympathy when your own business is subject to a similar process (via reverse engineering?).

@ChrisMayLA6 Ahh, excellent! What goes around comes around.

I am still fascinated by how youtube gets away with hosting movies on their service.

When 3 swedish boys created piratebay (that hosts no movies, it is only a search engine) they got long prison sentences and fines.

One law for US corporations, and one law for people trying to challenge their position, and the government always eager to help the big guy.

It seems, perhaps here we are entering venn diagram territory? ;)

@h4890

most definitely! Live by the sword dies by the sword... but BigTech always has wanted openness for the data of its consumers, while seeking to protect its core technology via IPRs.... and as you know there is little that I find more annoying than such rank hypocrisy....

@ChrisMayLA6 This is the truth! Open data for me, but not for you.

I find it hilarious that google is angry that they cannot, in some countries, profit off of newspaper articles without paying them.

@ChrisMayLA6

The neat thing about "distillation" is that DeepSeek don't even need to reverse engineer ClosedAI's model.

@ChrisMayLA6 I'd forgotten Sam Altman existed until I read this and now I honestly think he's the one I want to punch the hardest.
