open"AI" being mad about "their" data getting used by deepseek has a very Lockean appropriation theory / discovery doctrine vibe. like the claims that the new world was a wild, empty, unkempt continent and european settlers deserved property rights claims because they "discovered" it or worked the land, open"AI" seems to think that our data is some sort of wild, undiscovered resource that they get to claim because they scraped and processed it. ofc, the new world was neither empty nor untamed – indigenous peoples had been living on and tending these lands for millennia. ofc, anyone with the power and motive to exploit our personal and collective data at scale shouldn't be able to just lay claim to it. but ofc these logics are fundamental to our capitalist, colonialist society, so here we are rehashing the same centuries old ideologies of violence every few years, just with the latest hyped tech reskin.
