Today’s 3 Good Things:

Planted some spring bulbs yesterday with help from my partner. So excited about them.

Took Ibuprofen as a last resort for some pain, and for only maybe the second time in my life it may have actually worked!

Watched some of Elf, the movie, yesterday while starting on some gift wrapping.

Getting reasonable amounts of sleep, even if not the best. I know I listed this before, but sleep really is that essential for me to function.

Holiday gifts are wrapped and ready.

Can’t stop smiling when I think of a 4-year-old saying their favourite number is 600! I mean, they even HAVE a favourite number! Let alone one so big! 😆🥰

Being one of 4 adults doing shifts in figuring out how to construct a plastic, doll’s house for an excited but understandably frustrated youngster. Very happy to have been able solve the trickiest part noone else could (and why are kids’ toys so poorly designed?!)

Sharing beginner level chess knowledge with someone who was keen to hear it.

Today’s 3 Good Things:

A quiet day today, in many ways.

Listening to birds, even from inside the house: a collared dove, some long-tailed tits, a blackbird. So glad wild birds exist.

My partner. He’s always on this list in subtle ways, even when I don’t mention him outright. He’s part of many of the stories and wonders I list that keep me going. 💗

Today’s 3 Good Things:

Reclaiming an epically-derailed day and finding some peace and fun later on.

Walking in sunshine (I know, I know… this should be “walking ON sunshine”! 🎶)

The way one or two blackbirds stick close me as I refill the bird feeder. One quietly and calmly chatters to me the whole time. 🥰

Being able to quietly cancel plans due to getting sick, then resting. No drama or catastrophes.

The Dog House TV series for never failing to cheer me up! 💕

For the joy I feel when seeing others’ art, in all its forms. AI, with all its problems and flaws and being shoved in our faces, has made human-made art more valuable and rare to me.

Finished planting spring bulbs! Never planted this many, and never these types, so I’m looking forward to spring to see what pops up! 🌱

Have a wonderful plan to rebuild my walking fitness.

Also have a plan to visit my university for the first time! As a distance learner I have no need to visit, so this is purely for fun, no obligations. Rebuilding my walking fitness is going to be very wise for this trip, so I can walk freely around and explore, hopefully with fewer ME/CFS repercussions.

Enjoyed the golden sunshine streaming through the windows yesterday, even though I was stuck indoors (PEM from ME/CFS).

I just found out that I can get an ultra cute “WatchiBeastie” on my Garmin sports watch! It’s like a Tamagotchi but motivates you to meet your goals. It’s hilariously simple, and in 8-bit style. Well done GarminLabs. 👏

Connecting with a gentle horse yesterday that didn’t want anything but soft fingertip strokes on his cheek and jaw. Watching him relax his head, ears and eyes in response was magical. 💕

Walking at sunset and generally, walking a little more. This is a big, important goal. Hoping to break a cycle of lots of PEM crash days (ME/CFS).

Progressing in my coding coursework. Love that I can get straight back into it. Could never do that with essays.

Medical care being available for a loved one.

Cheapest, simplest new bird feeder (£1.55!) is a hit with feathered friends we don’t often see but now see a lot: blue tits and great tits.

So, so glad I can sleep in at the moment. Longest run of nights with poor sleep in ages and so I have no doubt this extra time in bed is probably rescuing me from worse outcomes!

Think I might have slept a little better.

Did some reading yesterday. Got half way into a new book! Hoping to reconnect with reading, so this is good. I’m reading Bird Therapy by Joe Harkness, highly recommended for anyone wanting to improve their mental health and who is curious about our feathered friends outside. Foreword is a glowing endorsement by Chris Packham. (Book CW: mentions of suicide)

Really, really glad Mastodon exists. This is the friendliest and kindest bubble of wonderful people I’ve ever found 💓 I now can’t imagine life without this. Truly.

More or less made it through an unusual low mood day. I didn’t cave to the mood. This is good as I don’t believe anything important caused it. Hopefully it has gone today.

Spent some time with family, and in a format that we all enjoyed. Really glad it worked well.

Simply feeling very lucky to be in a warm house with hot shower waiting for me, warm clothes and so on. These things are so easy to take for granted, but without them, life immediately switches to Hard Mode.

So glad to have had an assessment appointment for disability supports. The people who do these assessments are some of the loveliest people and are doing life changing work. I told my assessor that and she was really moved. (Tell people good truths 💗 they deserve to know the good that they do in the world.)

Managed to do some coursework, despite feeling very distracted. Reminded myself that I’m aiming for my version of “good enough”. It’s still a relatively high standard but it’s not necessarily going to be the same as other people’s.

Blue skies this morning.

Today’s 3 Good Things:

A beautiful frosty landscape this morning with blue and salmon pink morning skies.

Watching livestreams of wildlife on YouTube is wonderful! Love our back yard friends, but love learning about even more wildlife that way. Livestreams of wildlife is one of the best ways to truly learn about wildlife. No carefully curated sensational clips like TV documentaries, just real wildlife doing their real stuff. And usually inadvertently being hilarious, too! (I’ll link to a great YouTube channel below.)

Hope. I recently got a top up of hope by realising the majority of people I’m connected with here feel the same way about several prominent world leaders. We all continue to do what we can to make the world a better place, regardless.

I love watching the daily livestreams of this beautiful bird feeding station in Norway (link to channel below). You can spot tree sparrows, blue tits, great tits, nuthatches, greater spotted woodpeckers and even visits from red squirrels! It can get BUSY! 😅

It’s some of the coldest days for a long time here so of course I must mention the amazing inventions involved in home heating and even thermal clothing.

Getting out for some walks, gradually rebuilding my baseline.

My new Loop Switch 2 earplugs because they worked very well in Engage mode to block out noisy traffic at rush hour and still chat to my partner while on a walk. This is almost never possible for me. Not even sure my separate Engage Loops achieved this now I think of it.

Today’s 3 Good Things:

A little late to do this today as I’ve had such an incredible response on here to a request I had for recommendations. Gradually working through the many responses, not wanting to rush. If you’re one of those who helped: thank you! 🙏

I try to practice gratitude in multiple forms, especially in a way that helps share the good vibes with others. (Gratitude has helped me re-find my balance and not give in to anxiety about the future since Mr Numpty won the US election in Nov.) Today I sent off an email praising a member of staff who excelled in her work helping me with disability supports. I’m hoping it not only helps her start her year off right but also helps set a good vibe in her work environment. These people do so much good and rarely get ANY public recognition at all.

My affinity for coding in Python is growing. I’m glad to be learning a coding language that can be used in many different projects. Had experience with a fair few languages, but I’ll be using this one more than most in my course, so it’s a good thing I’m getting along well with it! I usually learn new coding languages “on the job” so learning via a course and getting feedback only via coursework is different, the feedback and rewards take longer to come, but it’s going okay. 👍

I made that staff member’s day! (The one I mentioned in my last post above.) That is so, so awesome! She deserved it! I sometimes feel like I don’t make much of a difference in this world at all, so to be able to make someone’s day, even just once, means the world to me.

So many wonderful replies to my post seeking out non cis male coders. Found wonderful people of all genders (yes, including more cis males… I love meeting lovely people, I just hardly ever met non cis male coders like me and it’s been impacting me badly.)

Today’s 3 Good Things:

My experience getting sick (= regular sickness from a chronic illness with no end in sight) these days is much less traumatic than it was; not necessarily because the sickness itself is easier but because of love, support and acceptance from around me and slowly cultivated from within, too. The reduction in stress because of this means I probably recover from crashes quicker and generally experience less anxiety and fear of crashes. Has been LONG road to get here and I can only see the difference when looking back at scales of 5+ years. Never thought it would be possible to be grateful for something related to such life-altering challenges.

A walk in the magical icicle kingdom yesterday. It was beautiful (photo attached) with lots of fluffy ponies, floofed-up birds, plus incredible colour gradients in the skies.

Handmade artwork that brings joy!

Hearing the characterful whistles, rattles and unique playful calls from starlings (birds) nearby. They are brilliant at mimicking anthropogenic sounds and even other birds! I once thought I heard 4 bird species in quick succession outside the window including a raptor (unusual!) and then realised it was just a little flock of starlings, probably showing off their talents and impressing their pals! 😆

Looking forward to using the heating less as the long series of hard frosts subsides here.

“Nothing is certain except…” pigeons will call their mating calls at absolutely any time of year possible! Smiled yesterday because I didn’t realise they had actually stopped calling during the freezing temperature days we had! Haha! They’re back at it now it’s warmer! 🤣

Had a leap forward in some coding coursework. Finally realised something that should have been rather obvious to say the least!

I don’t have anyone to talk to about coding who is a coder, and that’s how it’s been most of my life as even some toxic workplaces had a “no talking” rule (yep, I know…)… but I’m glad my partner can keep up with my ramblings now! He grasps the concepts very well and can follow what I’m on about. It helps me so much.

Waking up to a mixture of collared dove calls and starling chatter, followed by my local house sparrow “host” (the group) chirping incessantly to reestablish their social hierarchy. The great tits are now calling their mating calls, too. Robins defending their territories. It might only be January and still winter, but it’s a very busy world out there for the birds already!

Still keeping up the walking and simple body weight strength exercises. Gently does it. All seems to be going ok!

Accidentally making some coding much more robust. 🤣 Was debugging something else and ended up adding much improved code elsewhere. I learned a lot about how to write that improved code, too. Still frustrated about how long this is all taking me, but I am learning a LOT so I need to remember that it’s worth it.

Dyed the ends of my hair blue (a greeny-blue) and it looks surprisingly good! Would look terrible on me if I had dyed the full lengths of my hair, but the colour contrast seems to work well. Yay! Very happy as I gave myself the goal of dying my hair an unnatural colour after I graduated. My hair is too fine to risk harsh colour treatments without it breaking off, and most colours don’t even suit me. So, this kind of meets that goal, even if it’s only CurlSmith’s wash out-able “hair makeup”!

Got a lot more written for a report for my coding coursework. I’m astonished how much easier it is to write a report than essays. My brain “gets” this!

Jigsaw puzzles. Glad they exist as they help calm my mind and give me a sense of control and order when all else is chaotic. Great for ‘parallel play’ too (neurodivergent people often love, even prefer, this style of socialising).

Norman Thelwell (1923 - 2004) and his brilliant drawings of mischievous ponies that I adored as a kid, and his book on a different topic, “Effluent Society” that I just got a copy of. Even in the 70s he saw human’s impact on the environment that many others didn’t see.

An unusual one: most people know about “doom scrolling” (scrolling endlessly on social media timelines and making yourself feel worse due to the content there). But I noticed today that my carefully curated social media bubbles actually lift me up! The scientists and nature folx I follow on Bluesky and all the folx here on Mastodon are amazing.
