@RadicalEdward obviously, we’re all wrong and it’s pronounced “chair”.

@jb I kid you not I had a coworker that pronounced git like "jit". never heard anyone correct them, but we did all still pronounce it hard-g git.
can't tell if it was a "gif" joke, but they kept at it without a word and no one else said anything. just pronouncing it different past each other.

@RadicalEdward well, now I have a new interview question.

@jb or watch candidates eyes twitch as you explain "we were on jithub but moved to a selfhosted jitlab to better fit into our CI pipeline"

@RadicalEdward goddamn. I’m never going to have a job again.

@RadicalEdward @jb you're supposed to pronounce the “th” as ð or þ (eth or thorn), as in either “the” or “thing”

@u0421793 @RadicalEdward “jith-ubb” has a certain ring.

@RadicalEdward I'm super inconsistent. For example, while I pronounce "char" like "kare," I pronounce "chattr" like "Chatter," and "chmod" as "see aitch mod."
I've never said "chgpasswd" verbally before, so I don't know how I'd handle that one, lol.

@ksaj
I think I say chepassword but see aitch mod
@RadicalEdward

@RadicalEdward @ksaj char char char
🕺💃
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from phil_stevens@mastodon.nz
@RadicalEdward lol. Also, since 'car' is in there, there should also be 'chair' to really get some mileage out of that word.

@ksaj ok so
[ch,c][ar,air]
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from RadicalEdward@hackers.town

@RadicalEdward instructions unclear (english is terrible for recording phonetic information), i imagined "kare" as in japanese curry, ka-re.

@RadicalEdward Shar, as in https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Shar

Hang on, is that where dark mode comes from?

@RadicalEdward Closest to 'car', but not the same as how I pronounce the vehicle. Maybe a bit more like "k'ar"

@RadicalEdward char like the burnt food, but with a fake California accent so it rhymes with “gnar”. Makes “varchar” really fun to say.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from stormygleason@mastodon.sdf.org
@RadicalEdward I pronounce it kind of like “car”, but it’s closer to the first part of “character”. The vowel is different, I think the initial consonant is aspirated.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from janef0421@mastodon.nz
@RadicalEdward i wouldn't pronounce it at all, because it's an abbreviation that only exists so that i don't have to type the whole word "character". Except for the h, all its letters are under the left hand (qwerty/z) - might be cumbersome for some.
However, my inner voice reads it as in burnt food.

@RadicalEdward none of these.
/kæɹ/, like the first syllable in "character"
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from tess@mastodon.social
@RadicalEdward it is useful to note that many Americans have a vowel merger that makes the vowels in "character", "care", and "Kerrington" sound the same but not everyone does, which is why phonetic transcription is useful.

@RadicalEdward but I pronounce "varchar" as "var-car" instead of "var-char"

@RadicalEdward that's interesting. If you had not used a fixed font, my answer would have been different.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from davidpwhelan@mastodon.world
@RadicalEdward I cut off "character" as "kayr", also important to distinguish from Scheme/Lisp car/cdr "car"/"cudder".
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from mdhughes@appdot.net
@RadicalEdward It's Character so I just sare Kare because that's how the word is pronounced. Weird that people say Char as in burnt food lol.
