was just thinking personally pronounce it "car" but it's short for "character" which don't pronounce the first part like "car"

@jb I kid you not I had a coworker that pronounced git like "jit". never heard anyone correct them, but we did all still pronounce it hard-g git.

can't tell if it was a "gif" joke, but they kept at it without a word and no one else said anything. just pronouncing it different past each other.

@RadicalEdward I'm super inconsistent. For example, while I pronounce "char" like "kare," I pronounce "chattr" like "Chatter," and "chmod" as "see aitch mod."

I've never said "chgpasswd" verbally before, so I don't know how I'd handle that one, lol.

@RadicalEdward i wouldn't pronounce it at all, because it's an abbreviation that only exists so that i don't have to type the whole word "character". Except for the h, all its letters are under the left hand (qwerty/z) - might be cumbersome for some.

However, my inner voice reads it as in burnt food.

@RadicalEdward it is useful to note that many Americans have a vowel merger that makes the vowels in "character", "care", and "Kerrington" sound the same but not everyone does, which is why phonetic transcription is useful.
