As you've probably noticed, for now we've discontinued our posting here on our Mastodon profile due to it being a fairly significant burden for how few people it reaches.
It's possible we may return if we can more easily mirror posts from another site. There is allegedly a bridge available at @modrinth.com@bsky.brid.gy, but BridgyFed seems to have issues.
For now, our main presence and where we'll engage is over on Bluesky @modrinth.com

@modrinth@floss.social @modrinth.com@bsky.brid.gy what burden is there extra to posting on fedi? It seems like it's the same amount of effort as posting to bsky, considering you're not running your own instance

@Chloe primarily, we post a lot of images with our weekly featured projects posts and our Mastodon instance floss.social requires alt text on all images. We post with alt text on Bluesky, but doing that for every single platform is too much of a hassle, and we've been given multiple strikes for not providing sufficient alt text here.
We could certainly switch to another instance or run our own ideally, but all that just adds to the burden for such a little benefit from what we've experienced

@modrinth@floss.social can you not just copy and paste the alt text you use on bluesky?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Chloe@catwithaclari.net
@Chloe We did this for a bit, but it was a fairly tedious manual process with a lot of back and forth and was prone to errors (multiple times I posted and then realized a mistake like the wrong alt text on an image), and just did not seem like a good use of time

@modrinth@floss.social well, it is unfortunate that you don't feel it's worth the effort to keep posting on fedi, and thanks for taking the time to reply. And I am glad you are at least bridged with bridgy, although it is important to note that many instances have bridgy blocked and ss such those users won't be able to see your posts anymore.

@Chloe yeah, it is unfortunate. that kinda highlights a major issue with the fediverse, it's not actually really a connected social internet
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from modrinth@floss.social
@modrinth @Chloe the issue isnt with the fediverse, the issue is the fact that it has become socially acceptable to forego accessibility because "its too hard to copy an alt text over". do better

What gets me at that there are multiple apps and programs that allow you to post to both platforms at once, alt text and all.
With a tiny bit of searching they could have been saving themselves a ton of effort, but instead decided to just abandon an entire chunk of their userbase

@Alien_Sunset@dice.camp @stella@wetdry.world @modrinth@floss.social @Chloe@catwithaclari.net all because they think of accommodating for the disabled as an inconvenience.

Wow, way to completely and utterly miss the point

@modrinth It's understandable but i am wondering since when it's forced to use alt text at all times?
Also i am pretty sure there are apps that post your posts automatically in every social media connected to it, can't recommend one in particular cos i didn't use any but they exist.

@Azarilh it's specific to our instance, floss.social

@Azarilh the irony that I forgot to put alt text on this image at first...
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from modrinth@floss.social
@modrinth That is funny. And yea i understand. I managed like 5 to 6 social media for someone for some time, uploading images with alt text to all of them. It is tedious, i don't recommend it. But tbh i didn't do it for long so i didn't bother to look into the cross posting apps.
And an obvious questions comes to mind which is why not change instance?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Azarilh@mastodon.social
@Azarilh could certainly do that, but it's my understanding profiles do not transfer over well on Mastodon and it's always possible for an instance to stop operating or become undesirable again.
The best option would be to host our own, but that has even higher maintenance burdens than just putting up with whatever instance we've settled on
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from modrinth@floss.social
@modrinth That's why i never recommend to go to like "hobby hosted" instances. I just advertise mastodon.social directly. Ran by an actual company that will treat the instance properly. I know nothing about floss.social so ima not comment on that.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Azarilh@mastodon.social
@Azarilh FWIW, there are plenty of "actual companies" that also value and prioritize inclusion of people with disabilities.

@admin Thank you for pointing that out. /s
Forcing people to add alt text on everything will turn people away like you can see here. I think it's reasonable to expect people being a bit too tired or forgetful some times. We have the hashtag #ALT4me to help each other out too. Unfortunetely our society doesn't have a culture of using alt text, so using the hashtag can help people learn how to use them ( what to write ).
I am disabled and so is my partner, FYI.

@admin Despite all i still find it silly to leave because of that, i'd prefer to learn and get used to using alt texts, which is what i did, but i can't blame others for this to happen either. We need to educate people how to do it.

@Azarilh Absolutely, we agree, and also take that approach here. The Alt4Me hashtag is always a great idea. Despite what was suggested above about "multiple strikes", their account only ever received a single "friendly reminder" about the policy, last October. We think our approach is quite successful:

there is buffer
and it supports alt text

@oli @Chloe Looking into buffer, if it works well I'd love to resume posting to Mastodon.
Though, we will likely still have to switch instances, as we're in a weird grey area while being a fully FOSS project that also has commercial services now in partnership with a company that isn't fully FOSS. When we tried reaching out to the admins for clarification they...didn't respond

Sad to see you end the interaction on the fediverse, at least directly on the ActivityPub protocol 😩 I hope you choose to return at one point!
Maybe check out Fosstodon as an instance for the future, see if it's a good fit for you folks 👍🏻

@modrinth I enjoyed Modrinth's featured posts of the week, it was really nice way to find some unique projects which I shared with other people afterwards.
Gotta say, I'm disappointed in decision to abandon Mastodon/Fediverse, Modrinth does have a reach with account in here, in terms of followship even bigger than the one I help operate - @MinecraftWikiEN. That account already had benefited greater Minecraft Wiki community a few times and I really enjoy interactions with people interested in MCW, I believe it continues to be beneficial to operate an account in Fediverse from our perspective.
Alt text is time consuming, but the effort to write it is rewarding for those who need it.
I'd encourage you to reconsider - find a better workflow to post across multiple social media website, maybe one will have less of burden on you. In times of enshittification of social media it is my opinion you should strive to operate on open networks like Fediverse too.
