I am not that well versed in German politics to understand why the CDU and the AFD working together is a big deal. Aren't they both reactionary parties? Why are people shocked by them working together?

@glow you're kinda right. It's a big deal for several reasons: Parts of the AfD are officially considered right extremists, for instance Björn Höcke, one of their figure heads can legally be called a fascist. The other parties, including the CDU, pledged not to collaborate with the AfD for anything. This was called the Brandmauer (firewall), against naziism. CDU is conservative yes, but they didn't want to support nazis, at least if you believe their statements.

@glow Friedrich Merz linked the rejection of cooperation with the AfD with his own future as CDU leader just two weeks ago. So he claimed very vocally, that there will be no cooperation. Now the CDU only reached a majority in favor of a motion against migration thanks to the votes of AfD. This basically breaks his promises and shows he's willing to work with AfD or at least take their votes if it helps him reaching his goals.

@glow the motion asks for very restrictive migration politics, breaking with current EU policies to share the responsibility of dealing with migrants and asylum seekers, more or less in line with what the nazis want.
What's more is that this happened more or less right after remembrance of the holocaust.
So I agree with you it shouldn't be that surprising, but the CDU also crossed a line on federal level the first time and it's also a signal to the local parties it's ok to work with AfD.

@glow I hope that makes it a bit more understandable for you. Also take it with a grain of salt because yes I follow what happens but I'm not a German citizen so it's still kind of an outside perspective.

@miro Thanks for the explanation. So what I am seeing on my feed is righteous indignation and not shock and surprise?
