I've started using @getgrid for location sharing as an alternative to Find My Friends. It uses @matrix to communicate and seems to be exactly my thing. With that said, it's very early days. The roadmap looks good, but the app itself seems a bit buggy and inefficient on some platforms. But it'll get there.

@zak @matrix looks interesting! Now if only I could get my IRL friends on matrix 🤣

@distributed A Matrix account is not required!

@zak huh thats cool! Wonder how it's e2ee then, as there needs to be an exchange of keys between contacts for that, if I'm not mistaken

@distributed I believe that still happens during enrollment and when adding a "friend." It's using the Matrix protocol, it's just not using an account to get it done.
Granted, I haven't looked that far into it.

@distributed @zak An existing Matrix account is indeed not required! The app leverages Matrix's encryption standards but provides its own authentication and identity management system via SMS verification. This ensures that users benefit from E2EE without requiring a user/password from a prior Matrix account. We're considering eventually moving away from phone numbers to enhance privacy down the line.

@getgrid This would be awesome to see. As someone who obviously uses a password manager, I'd love the ability to sign up for a normal account for this.

@zak @matrix super excited to see that you've given us a try, Zak! We released a new update on the Apple Store today and are currently waiting on Google Play to approve it. We tackled a few bugs and added some features (like sharing windows and device key verification). Summarized changes/features can be found at our blog post here: https://rezivure.io/version-1-0-2-is-live-2/
We'd always love your feedback, so please do let us know what bugs you've encountered so we can make sure we address those ASAP!

@getgrid Thanks! I'd been checking for that update all day today, but not surprised it's still under review. On that note, I know this was mentioned elsewhere, but I'd really love to see Android builds of Grid available either on GitHub or the website. I use Obtainium for many of my installed apps, and bypassing Google Play would make things much smoother for me, and I'd imagine many others.
Other than that, and a complaint about battery life from a friend of mine using Grid on iOS (which I'd already submitted as feedback), I'd say things are looking good. Most of my other immediate requests already seem to be filed as issues (like custom profile photos, for example).
Thanks for putting in this effort here! This app was sorely needed and I'm glad you're making it.

@zak This is awesome feedback. Thank you for this!
Currently our location plugin uses Google Play services. We 100% are planning to get away from that as we want it to be compatible with Obtainium and folks who use GrapheneOS for example. It's something we're actively working on.
The new release (when the Google Play overlords finally approve it) does include a battery saver mode & it would be great to get feedback on whether or not that is making a tangible difference.

@getgrid I'm pretty new to all of this, but I'm pretty sure that GrapheneOS itself has the ability to route those Google Play Services location calls to Android itself. I'm not quite sure how that works, though. Anyway, understandable for the time being!
