Of all of the nerdy services I've started using lately, I've had the least amount of luck with Matrix. I just haven't gotten the hang of it yet.

Some Progressive Rock for your Friday night. I don't want to undersell this one.
Some time in 1998, my father happened upon this song. He instantly loved it, and it influenced his interaction with music. I was less than 10 years old at the time, but he slowly introduced me to prog as a genre, and doing so changed the way that I listened to music for the rest of my life.
Music, rather than being thought of purely as semi-meaningless entertainment about love and sex to a repetitive beat, turned into a form of endless artistic expression. An entirely blank canvas upon which to paint an audible picture of limitless detail. At the time, I had no idea that it could be anything like that.
In other words, I'm not kidding when I say that this song changed my life. It now sits in a library full of songs, albums, and artists that I may like better, but this one stands out as the one that started it for me.

I've been seeing this graphic for Global Switch Day being circulated. As enthusiastic as I am about open and ethical solutions like these, I think of them, only Mastodon, Pixelfed, and Signal are truly viable services that the mainstream could and should use.
Friendica is not currently a viable replacement for Facebook. Facebook's main draw is not that it's a textbook social network. It's that people you know are on it, and it's dead simple to add them. Friendica has a fairly small base of users, and I wouldn't say that it's simple to find people that you know there. I hope it sees a lot of love in the future, but as of now, I wouldn't use it, and I don't expect many others to join.
Peertube is awesome, but it can't compete with YouTube in terms of content. Hosting video is expensive, and so switching entirely from YouTube to Peertube won't be possible until more people have more storage to spare to spare. I also don't know how the service plans to address smartphones becoming the primary device that most people now use (and store their content on).
Loops looks great, but doesn't yet have stable mobile applications and isn't even federated. I have no idea why anyone would use it in its current state, but I'm sure it'll be awesome once it's ready.
My point here is that while it's great to encourage the use of open, ethical alternatives, encouraging the use of incomplete experiences will drive the mainstream away. Don't tell your mainstream friends to swap from macOS to Arch Linux. Similarly, don't tell your mainstream friends to use all of this stuff until it's ready. It's not.

For a bit I was sad that Final Fantasy XVI will likely be the latest in the series for years to come. And then I remembered that there are still like 4 Final Fantasy VII games for me to try given that I still haven't played that.

If you're a @1password user, or you're just getting started with password managers in general, I'd strongly recommend a look at this blog post from @jpgoldberg. A secondary encryption secret is why I chose 1Password as my password manager, well before I started working for the company. It's a massive stand out feature that others don't have. But to most, it's very difficult to explain.

I have a lot of tech t-shirts that I've acquired over the years, but very few of them have aged well. Evernote? Garbage now. Brave? Probably wouldn't wear that around. Soundcloud? Hilarious if nothing else.

Please don't bash people or companies who are leaving Twitter just because they're doing so late compared to you. You're accomplishing nothing, and you're discouraging the use of the open, ethical platform that you've chosen to use.

Alright, I'm officially a @kagihq subscriber. About time. It'll take some time to get all of my devices switched over to using it by default, but once done, I should be set.
As a bonus, it was nice to see them mention @1password in their documentation on 2FA applications!

I often complain about Disney as a company growing out of control and slashing their parks quality because they are and they do. But every so often, they do still surprise me with something small and wholesome. I ordered a guava danish at the Polynesian as a late night snack before I head home for the day. I picked up my bag when my order was ready. I received three of them for no additional cost. Thank you, mystery cast member.

Continuing to name my home devices after Final Fantasy X characters and locations. I would've been stupid not to set the hostname for my @homeassistant Green to be "Home," so I did. But any good hone automation system can be used with multiple different homes. So what did I name my own home? Zanarkand, obviously.

I've started using @getgrid for location sharing as an alternative to Find My Friends. It uses @matrix to communicate and seems to be exactly my thing. With that said, it's very early days. The roadmap looks good, but the app itself seems a bit buggy and inefficient on some platforms. But it'll get there.

Spoken as someone who constantly has 100+ tabs open in my web browser on my work device, I am extremely tired of seeing multiple tiny stable channel Chromium releases every week. I understand that it's important, and I appreciate the work that goes into making sure the browser remains as safe as possible. But boy is it an interruption.
