i can tell already that this show has bigger ambitions RE: plot than Gravity Fall had. it feels like most episodes of GF were silly bullshit with a tiny bit of plot/character development for flavour. SU feels like they have a plot in mind and are just forced to tell it through the medium of silly bullshit.

i do think this show is pretty good. but it's not very good at being a cartoon sitcom where wacky things happen each episode. it's way too sincere and earnest, and i don't think sincerity works when you're making an episode about pranking someone into eating a really spicy donut. i hope they stop trying to be pastel Regular Show soon.

@boobs_idiot when you listen to interviews with the SU crew, there's a lot of talk about how CN shows are "board-driven", i.e. instead of a writer's room producing a complete script for an episode they just give a 1 page outline and then the storyboarders also write all the dialogue etc., iiuc this means that the people creating the show are more often people from like a webcomics background, which I guess leans more tumblr (to wit, a bunch of the crew has/had an active tumblr where they would post comics and stuff)

@boobs_idiot there's two relationships that could be described as toxic yuri but in both cases the show spends little time on the relationship itself and instead focuses on the fallout after it falls apart. It also takes a while to get to that part. If you interpret lars as a he/him lesbian then I guess that might also qualify
