as the least techy person in this metaphorical room, why the heck do we not have batched notifications yet?

makes you want to purposely not post something that'll get hundreds of notifications

@BigTittyBimbo @vapaad Does it not depend on the app you use? I use Phanpy (on Android) since about a year, because it bunches reboots and yes, it clusters likes and reboot notifications.

@saarmuller @vapaad It does, some apps offer it, but most don't actually. I am in general a bit disappointed by how similar the Mastodon apps are.

@vapaad I saw some grouped on whatever web UI my instance has the other day! 🎉 but I usually use an app on my phone which does NOT have (/use) them (yet 🤞).

Looks like they did get officially shipped as part of Mastodon 4.3 which was released late last year? https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/10/mastodon-4.3/

@vapaad @jepyang I am also tusky or bust and what I do if something blows up (unlikely, but it has happened) is, after I get fed up with it, I mute notifications on it. That might not work for you because you tend to post some actual useful public health stuff and not just stupid jokes and you might want to see responses from people outside your usual corner, because they might have useful discussion or questions.

@funkula @jepyang oh I muted it but also I feel bad doing so because what if there's a legit question? But also I'm not anyone's doctor, I'm just another jackass on the Internet, so feeling guilty isn't something I want to dwell on too much.

@vapaad @jepyang could always just revisit in a day or two and see if anything cropped up

@vapaad Thankfully the app I use does have them, but I still don't love getting a ton of notifications because it means getting more obnoxious replies that willfully miss the point than normal, so I make most things followers only if I feel like they could escape containment otherwise.
