Toot

Written by Furthering on 2025-01-29 at 10:46

This weekend, I met remotely with three Americans I've stayed in touch with since they moved back to the US.

Our discussion turned, of course, to current events.

I mentioned how one "easy" way to resist/protest is through the wearing of masks (because the US is no longer involving itself in public health, because of surveillance, because of mask bans, because it's a way to help protect and support the vulnerable, because it's a show of solidarity).

I was met with a beat of silence and then a swift change in topic.

@Furthering That is EXACTLY how it always goes for me, at the mere mention of masks or covid: no one talks for a beat, then subject is changed. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thank you for trying, it's much appreciated.

@ikuo1000 It's interesting, too, because I think if I was around them physically and asked them to mask, they would do it. So while I wasn't surprised at this reaction, I was also disappointed.

@Furthering Ahh, then your friends are still a step above some of my extended family, with whom I had a very similar exchange in person last summer, and not a single other person masked up. 🥴

@ikuo1000 I am thankful for this. I'm so sorry that it's been a challenge to get people to respect your health (and their own).

@Furthering Thanks. I do wish some people would simply be more considerate of others (me), but sometimes it's the "and their own" part that baffles me the most! Like, when the person who is taking no precautions is a pregnant woman, or an elderly person with Parkinson's, or a young man with a history of heart issues. I do not understand them at all.

@ikuo1000 I think a significant pressure to conform is at play. But I also keep in mind that our governments and media failed us -- many people actually don't understand/believe the danger their health is in because of insufficient messaging.

@Furthering Agree. I try to hold some grace for the people who just follow mainstream media and likely do not know better, but I still get indignant with people who know me, with whom I have shared sources and data, and still they choose not to know better!

@ikuo1000 @Furthering

Even if you say it is against the flu, people do not want to listen.

@ABScientist @ikuo1000 Yep, and friends have backslid on getting their flu vaccination, too. Not for any ideological reasons, just because they didn't get around to it.

@Furthering @ABScientist 🤦🏻‍♀️

What happened to, "When you know better, do better"?! (Maya Angelou) This pandemic was a huge opportunity for everyone to know better about respiratory viruses and both personal and public health, and instead of doing better, most people are doing worse, even backsliding?! 😫

@ikuo1000 @ABScientist Yeah, for me, it's one thing to make choices for yourself, but it's quite another when it puts others in danger.

@Furthering

I mask all the time when I go into buildings (not outdoors unless it's really crowded) and have done so since the beginning of Covid. And I have to say that turning masking into a subcultural activity is understandable, but bad.

@richpuchalsky I would love it if it were a mainstream cultural activity and normalized.
