One of my side hobbies is transcribing documents in the online catalog of the US National Archives under their #CitizenArchivist program.

For instance today I attempted to type up this 1813 Letter of Marque issued by President Madison from the war of 1812. It's fun to get to read these primary sources and contribute a little by transcribing them which makes them more findable.

Don't agree with my transcription... join in and fix it.

For some reason this post gets boosted up heaps whenever folks find my feed. Just the right kind of nerdy I suppose.

These days I'm sifting through a file called "War Department. The Adjutant General's Office. 1821-4/28/1904"

I spend a lot of time in the #CivilWar period... In related news here's a letter where Halleck summons Maj Gen Hunter to the principal's office on behalf of Lieut Genl Grant. MmmmMMM
