Exciting happenings! Some of my trans friends and I are building a new app for connecting queer people.

We're currently surveying 2SLGBTQIA people about your experiences & would love to get your input: https://bit.ly/SeattleQueerConnections

The survey is anonymous, & please share! Thanks! #Seattle #TransJoy 🏳️‍⚧️

@ericawrites First question: why not a website? Android and iOS are untrustable surveillance capitalism platforms whose owners have loudly signalled their complicity in the project of exterminating queer people.

You're writing an app for platforms that can be leaking data every which way.

If it's a website the user can choose their own operating system and browser, and connect via Tor.

And you want "anonymous" input via Google Docs?

I hope you mean well, but if so this is absurdly dangerous.

@katyswain Thank you for your feedback. I know things are scary right now, and security is something important to our entire community, especially now, that we are taking seriously.

But it's important to remember that the authorities do not have unlimited resources and pick their targets carefully or what's easiest. We do not expect that a simple friendship/dating/etc. app is going to be a high priority target anytime soon.

(Look to TX to see DMV records, that the gov owns, being raided by TX's AG or the POTUS pardon of HIPPA violator at the children's hospital.)

If a queer connection service ever is targeted, a website will not be significantly safer than an app, even though there are genuine facts about how a website can be more secure, simply because a platform focused on growing community between strangers fundamentally cannot be secure enough to keep out such an attack without being exclusive enough to defeat its entire purpose.

We all take risks every single day. This doesn't mean safety isn't something we're brushing off, but how secure anything is directly tied to your risk tolerance and the perception of trust in what you're using (which may or may not be tied to actual security features).

The only way to have a truly "secure" project like this is to not do it all. Personally, I find that unacceptable in an age where the majority of people use the internet to seek community, for better or worse.
