Toot

Written by Grim on 2025-01-27 at 15:34

my friend had never seemed to hear the idiom "throwing the baby out with the bath water" yesterday and i tried to look up the origin of it only to find everything pointing to an old satirical German ?book? or page from something. however, no one actually wrote in English what the page says and trying to type the letters into google translate had reminded me that i don't know old calligraphy that well and also German has probably changed

@welshpixie @renardroi

A few corrections, if I may (also starting at the top, which is talking about the thing with the bath water):

@renardroi That's the part above the image in today's German. I'm struggling a bit with the rest, give me a second.

@renardroi Second part.

@renardroi That was nasty. Late medieval language in a woodcut uncluding an agricultural metaphor that nobody uses today.

@eyeling thank you!! this is super fascinating, although it doesn't give quite the insight into the phrase that I hoped it would

@renardroi

As mentioned below: German has changed very much. But, the saying (although not that common in German anymore) is still there. The modern version is "Das Kind mit dem Badewasser ausschütten"
