Ok I am looking at your notes/blogs about ceph and I see the autoscaling issue post (https://blog.mei-home.net/posts/ceph-rook-crush-rules/)

Do you think is there a way to head that off and define things right directly from the start?

@rachel No, I don't think so. As far as I know, .mgr, the problematic pool, is an internal Ceph pool, and I don't think you can change it's initial setup. But it's possible that this was just an issue in certain versions of Ceph?
