Toot

Written by Spencer Magnusson on 2025-01-26 at 18:47

I've been consolidating my online presence, to control my data as well as my time. I recently left a few sites because of that.

For a few months now, I've looked into ways people could financially support me: my #Blender add-ons, art, #YouTube videos, all outside my actual job. Apart from just posting my PayPal, that means joining yet another platform, with the implicit obligation of creating exclusive paid-only content ON TOP OF stuff I share freely, otherwise why ask for subscribers? /1

I like that many of my add-ons and videos are freely available. I avoid making things paid unless it's a massive undertaking like #nViewAddon. But now, it's not one product takes all my time, but lots of smaller stuff.

So in a way, subscription makes sense for that, but then it becomes a matter of marketing stuff I can't fully share because it's behind a paywall. And you also have to retract from other platforms to further incentivize others to reach you on your paid platform. /2

I'm a big believer in #FOSS and openly sharing knowledge. I like that (some of) my hobbies are disconnected from money.

But I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. I don't have enough of a community to make any big jumps yet, but I can't gauge that without more paid products, platforms, and time.

Feedback from other creators would be appreciated.

@smagnusson I'm probably not a good example, but I've always shared most of my work for free, and my Patreon, Ko-Fi etc are tip jars, I do not provide any additional content through them. People contribute. Not a huge amount, but I don't feel it'd be much higher if I paywalled things.

I like it this way, it leaves me free to make things at my own pace with no obligations. It also means I can use whatever platforms I want for my art and articles, since I don't need them to support monetisation.
