Jules and Jim.
Oh, I envy you. A magical film, a cinematic fairy tale. The acting is flawless, and Oskar Werner especially is in a league of his own. A film from a different era of film-making, yet once we accept its otherness, it speaks to us with urgency and immediacy. Just thinking about this film puts a smile on my face!

@the_roamer our view over here is that Catherine filled a male role in a typical old school relationship power structure and Jules and Jim filled the female role, vying for her attention while she was wrapped up in her own world. The bridge scene says this all in direct allegory. The "surprising" aspects of Catherine's behavior are not so far off the typical male's beaten path of behavior.

That is an interesting way of looking at it. I am not very analytical as regards films, and I don't read reviews, but what you say resonates. I will think about it!

@the_roamer we spent a tiny bit of time looking at analysis this morning but found nothing that matched our take. Like you, we mostly just soak it all in. But this one got us talking.

@noplasticshower The love triangle was certainly her in the dominant role. I was referring more to style

@theleavingyear I loved how the style shifted subtly throughout. That was a gorgeous piece of work.

@culturednyc I wish I had copy of sling blade. It has disappeared. I have been looking for years.

@noplasticshower @culturednyc this fact makes me crazy. How does a movie like this not stream anywhere and is seemingly completely unavailable. I’ve been dying to show it to my wife forever

@noplasticshower Sigh…discovered J&J — and the whole French New Wave — in college in the early “70s. Changed my life.
