i don't know anything about how pixelfed works but looking at mastodon, each instance storing its own copy of every image that's posted on one of them is obviously unsustainable, and becomes more so the more instances there are. it's not a decentralised framework; it's what large monolithic services do clumsily transplanted

i don't know what the technical solution would be โ maybe instances should only store an image if they don't find it on x number of other instances? โ but the point is the entire concept is obviously not ready for prime time. it works for a bunch of hobbyists running their own single-user instances in their computer catacombs but not for an actual social network
