I have been on Mastodon for over 5 years and I just now reported my first account. It is not that there haven't been other bad apples (especially in the past 2 years), but they are usually flagged before I need to. This one was harassing Native Americans and spreading lies about our culture, so it was probably not seen by most.

It is going to be even more difficult than usual for marginalized people moving forward, so if you are a privileged person please try to put your own existential crisis into perspective. We need your allyship and courage, not your personal displays. There are a lot of good people here, so I know you can redirect that energy in the right way.

I suspect as mastodon grows that flagging abuse will become even more important.

We can do all of our part to pick up litter and dispose of it correctly.

@meg did that account seem very bot like, only posting mostly stuff from video sites, claiming that missing and murdered indigenous women movement is a hoax?

If so, those have been making the rounds and reported into oblivion on Bluesky.

@JamieGC No, this one is different I think (though I'm glad other trolls are getting caught). This was mostly about how Native Americans live off US aid (we don't) and how we were "granted" special land and privileges (haha). Just basic racist stuff that most non-whites receive, but the guy wouldn't stop. The sad thing is that many people believe this.
