When I moved away from the USA in 2015, it was largely because I felt our politics had become too brittle, and I felt the next external shock would reveal our fault lines. Little did I know that that the shock would come from inside.

I'm not so sure the shock was completely internal. Russia has been doing everything it can to help friendly right wing parties throughout the West, including the USA. Yes, they exploited the brittleness you're talking about, but there was a lot of foreign interference.
