@ClintonAnderson It seems to be a change YouTube made a little while ago to their filters / firewalls. Unfortunately it's not something we can change as it's their side blocking us trying to pull a preview.

@ClintonAnderson @FediTips It'll depend on the instance I think Mastodon.social being huge asked YouTube to unblock them, but I don't know how they did or who they spoke to. I'm not sure if there are tricks to getting it unblocked but if there are I haven't found them!

It works for me here - @bryson , did you have to do anything special about Youtube previews?

(I have noticed that sometimes I get a weird "failed" embed on other people's youtube posts on our server, that just has some German and goes to nowhere if clicked, I assume that's a language thing that comes from being on a EU-based server, I'm Canadian)

Oh but one other thing to note - when I post a YT link, it doesn't actually create the thumbnail right away - the server takes about 30-60 seconds to create it and update the toot. Have you gone back and checked your previous toots at all?

Yeah, any preview link to any site may take a minute or two to appear. It gets generated by the server of the person viewing it, so it may appear at different times for people on different servers.

Basically, go back to your post after a minute or so if you want to check whether a preview has appeared, and perhaps refresh the page too.
